The Pros and Cons of Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces, also known as clear braces, are orthodontic tools used to straighten teeth and fix bite problems. They consist of clear or tooth-colored ceramic brackets attached to the surface of your teeth with similarly colored wires and rubber bands, which provide more discretion.
Since the amount of time required to fix the problems with your teeth using either ceramic braces or metal braces is the same, the only difference between the two orthodontic devices is the fact that one is metal and the other is ceramic.
Pros and cons of ceramic braces
Pros
Less painful: According to people who have worn both metal and ceramic braces, ceramic braces are less painful on your gums and cheeks because the ceramic is not as harsh.
Hard to notice: One of the things that make people avoid getting braces even when they need them is the fact that they are visible and can be embarrassing, especially for adults. The brackets used for ceramic braces can be color-matched to your natural teeth, making them difficult to notice at a distance.
Very durable: Some people are wary about getting ceramic braces because they do not think that they are durable or will last through the treatment without having to be replaced. Fortunately, ceramic braces are hard to damage and will last throughout your treatment.
Cost effective: Ceramic braces are a little more expensive than metal braces, but they are still a cost-effective method of fixing crooked teeth when compared to alternatives like clear aligners, which cost more and take longer to achieve the desired effect.
Cons
Size: Even though the size of the brackets used for braces these days is smaller, ceramic braces have bigger brackets than traditional metal braces, which might be a deal breaker for some people. However, the fact that the brackets are tooth-colored should negate their size.
Stain teeth: Like metal braces, ceramic braces are connected to your teeth with small rubber bands. Due to the fact that rubber is a porous material, the longer it stays in your mouth, the more likely it will stain and discolor your teeth. However, teeth staining is not something new when it comes to braces in general, and the stains can be removed by your orthodontist when the braces have been taken off.
Cannot handle a great deal of pressure: Ceramic braces are durable but can be damaged if they are exposed to too much pressure over a long period of time. If your teeth require extensive treatment, your dentist might recommend getting metal braces instead of ceramic.
Conclusion
Ceramic braces are very effective and offer discretion when getting your teeth straightened. If you are in need of braces, talk to your dentist to find out if ceramic braces are right for you.
